Welcome to Biology at LHS

This high school Biology course will be investigated through a systemic approach that ties together the concepts of energy transformation, photosynthesis, heredity, natural selection, evolution, biotechnology, life processes, population dynamics, taxonomy and ecology.  This course will integrate scientific, laboratory and research processes as part of the conceptual development.

Prentice Hall Biology, 2002.  Replacement cost is $55.

Evaluation

The course grade will be determined by the combination of weighted points earned by homework and classroom assignments, labs, quizzes, tests, projects, and final exam.  Various forms of assessment will be utilized throughout the course.  The weight of each is listed below:

Tests: 40 %
Quizzes: 15 %
Labs/Projects: 15 %
Daily work: 10 %
Performance Final: 5 %
Final exam: 15 %

Classroom Rules

  1. Be on time and prepared for class with your notebooks.
  2. NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES OUT IN CLASS!!
  3. NO FOOD OR SNACKS only WATER is allowed in class.
  4. Respect everyone in class and the classroom pets they are here for all to enjoy!
  5. Return materials that you borrow from me and treat it like YOU paid for it.
  6. Sharpen your pencil when needed (please do not ask others for lead).
  7. Bathroom passes are issued ONLY if you already have the LONGHORN HALL PASS filled out and ready to go (NOT WHILE I’M TEACHING!)
  8. Remain seated until the bell rings NOT beforehand.

Academic Integrity

When in this class, it is expected that all students will produce work that is their own.  This means that cheating will not be allowed on any assignment, at any time. Infractions regarding academic dishonesty will be dealt with according to school and county policies.

Make-Up Work Policy and Incomplete Work

  • It is the student’s responsibility to get any make-up work while they were absent.  All make-up work must be completed within 5 school days after the students returns or it will be considered a Late Work.  Maximum of 75% can be made for Late Work.
  • If you miss the class before a test or quiz, you will be required to take that test or quiz.
  • Major assignments can be made up before, during the student’s lunch or after school at the teacher’s discretion.  Students may also make up tests on Saturday school.  ALL students are encouraged to do test corrections regardless of their test grade since YOU WILL see it again for the Final. 

Academic Interventions

For students who need additional academic assistance in Chemistry, the following services are available:

  • individual teacher tutoring before school,  during lunch, or after school by appointment

  • required academic study during lunch based upon low test, quiz, essay performance or due to failure to turn in course assignments

  • weekly academic tutoring in Longhorn Student Success.

Communication and Grade Reporting

The Gwinnett County Parent Portal will be the central method of communication of grades. Parents and students can log into the Parent Portal at any time with any computer to see grades that are updated every night. Click here for more information.
